Walesby Aquatics are at the forefront of the Koi industry and stand out from the crowd in how they operate their Koi business. Andy & Ricky say that they class Koi as their specialist subject and the 2 of them are absolutely Koi Kichi. In terms of how they run the Koi side of the business to them it’s all about breaking away and running things how they believe is best. This starts from the minute new Koi land and begin their quarantine period.
The shop consists of 5 main display ponds and numerous smaller vats for keeping various types of Tosai, around 300 Koi can be on display during the main season. It is not just development at the shop that has enabled Walesby Aquatics to get into the position they are today. Combined with the main premises a massive 22-pond offsite facility is where a lot of the magic really happens. Each pond is individually filtered and situated inside several large greenhouses. It is these ponds where all new imports are taken for a strict quarantine procedure and each different breeders Koi are kept segregated. The quarantine procedure at Walesby Aquatics is not just about getting the Koi parasite free and ensuring no KHV is present but more about getting the Koi in real top condition and primed for entering into the retail environment. To do this all shipments are kept for a minimum of 8 weeks in low stocking levels and fed exclusively on Saki Hikari koi food. This allows the koi to regain body weight and improve the skin condition that can be lost during the shipping process.
The offsite facility helps to benefit Walesby Aquatics is many other ways. From each shipment of koi a number are held back and grown into larger Tosai, Nissai or sometimes Sansai examples. Observing the development of these Koi educates Andy & Ricky further into the development of each breeders lineage which in turn is passed onto their customers. A continuous stock of Koi is held at the facility so that new stock is appearing at the shop all the time and Koi are made available all year round.
Andy & Ricky’s friendships with many of the breeders in Niigata allows them to access all area’s and get the koi they require. Walesby Aquatics deals direct with the Japanese breeders and does not use a UK agent. Ricky not only visits Niigata several times each year to select new koi, he also takes a trip each to work with the breeders and experience their daily activities which gives him a unique insight into their knowledge and techniques. This rare opportunity has gained Ricky a great reputation and he regularly writes articles in Koi magazines to share his knowledge and experience.
A visit to Walesby Aquatics is a great experience for any koi keeper. Even if it’s just for a chat and a drink you are always welcome.

Hajiro Challenge Entries....
For everybody that entered the Hajiro Challenge at last years harvest event we are now ready for your pictures.
In order to get the best possible picture, photograph your fish in a solid blue bowl and try and get somebody to hold an opaque cover over the bowl to stop and reflections.
It would be best for us if you can email the pictures to us so we can print them to keep the print quality the same or if this is not possible bring a printed picture into us. We would also like the size of the koi if possible?
I look forward to seeing how the koi have progressed.
Regards, Ricky |
