Japan Trip • Autumn 2006 Back
Day 1

Who said dreams don't come true???

Today i was invited to harvest one of Marusyo's and Oomo's big ponds. It contained some stunning koi and allowed me to fulfill yet another dream, netting a jumbo pond.

The Nishikigoi Niigata Direct facility is finished and looks much better than it did in August when i was working on it. This then led us to a brief visit to Oomo Koi Farm to check the No.1 Nissai Gin Rin Showa which was reserved for us. This will be spending another year in Niigata in one of Oomo's best ponds.

A nice day to break us in and tomorrow i will be harvesting Yagenji's best Sansai pond where we have had 4 koi growing on.

Day 2

HOW AMAZING

We spent half of the day at Yagenji today and harvested his best Sansai pond. It was mind blowing and i don't think i will forget it for the next 2 or 3 years. We spent ages selecting koi at this farm and ended up with 3 koi left growing at his farm included his No.1 Sansai and 2 of his best Nissai Shiro Utsuri. Our koi we grew at this farm last year came out amazing and grew very well.

We ended the day with some stunners from Kaneko and arranged to return to view his Nissai Tategoi. Check out the pictures below

Day 3

What a day yet again. We have once again raised the quality of the fish we are purchasing. We spent the day at the Nagaoka koi show and saw most of the koi arriving. After looking around we displayed interest in several serious pieces. In the end we purchased Kaneko koi farms No.1 Goshiki which was 2 years old and a top tategoi Shiro Utsuri both of which were entered into the show. Nogami also had a very high grade Nissai Showa which he said he wished to use as a future Oyagoi (parent fish). After much negotiation he said he would only be pre-pared to sell it to me so i couldn't refuse and purchased it. Mouth watering is the best way to sum it up.

After spending several hours following the judges we were amazed to see that our Goshiki won 1st prize, Shiro Utsuri got 2nd prize and the Nogami Showa won best in size (45cm) which had the most competition. INCREDIBLE!!!

The Goshiki and Shiro Utsuri will be left to grow in Japan for one year and the Showa will return to the UK.

Day 4

Not alot of pictures from today so i will post them with tomorrows. We bought some extremely high grade small koi from Sakazume. He grows these high grade Tosai indoors and develops thier quality and keeps them small. They are the sort of koi that take top awards in the smaller classes at shows. So take a look tomorrow, amongst what we bought are 3 top koi. We also cam across some nice Asagi and Aka Matsuba from the monube bloodline. Pictures posted tomorrow.

Day 5

Today it was incredibly rainy in Niigata but that definately wasn't going to stop us. First stop was at Kase, Koshiji koi farm. Slightly dissapointed that most of the top koi had sold out. Luckily however he had just been harvesting and he pulled the little truck over opened the container and bowled his best Metalic Doitsu Ochiba Shigure. In spring time we were the only people to have this new variety so this is why he saved this koi. It was planned to go to the Nogyosai show but now it will be returning to England.

We finally managed to get Makoto at his facility in Yomogihira and temptation really set in. Myself and Ryan bought a top tategoi Gin Rin Sanke as a joint venture and that will be growing in Japan for 1 year. We also purchased some Tategoi Kin Ki Utsuri (which are even better this year) and some very high grade Nissai koi all of which are returning back to England.

The day ended at my good friend's, Nogami Koi Farm. Here 90% of the stocks are world class and we bagged some corkers. They look good on the pics but believe me they look even better in the flesh.

Tomorrow is set to be very exciting. We are at Oomo's No.1 Nissai harvest. One of his secret ponds, pics will be posted.

Day 6

What a way to end and incredible week!!

We began early today so we could get to the No.1 Oomo harvest. Everybody was really excited and things got even better when Oomo san invited Ryan to net the pond and harvest the koi. Aged only 13 it was an incredible experience and he was incredibly lucky, i had to wait until i was 15 to do my 1st harvest. Just about every koi was mouth watering and in the end we were tempted to buy 1 very high grade koi that will be returning to England.

Our final stop was to Yamazaki Koi Farm where we we struck a pot of gold literally. After 3 years of trying he finally had some lovely Nissai Doitsu Hariwake which we just couldn't refuse. This was capped off nicely by the purchase of 2 stunning Yonsai Doitsu Hariwake which ended the trip in glorious fashion.

I will be back in England very soon and i will be able to reply to all of the emails i have been told i recieved. We will be back in the shop on Saturday for anybody who wishes to see us.
